3. Gallagher announced executive leadership changes

Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. has seen big changes over the past couple of years with some major acquisitions, but in 2023 changes to its executive team attracted significant interest.

The brokerage named Thomas J. Gallagher – brother of J. Patrick Gallagher Jr., the long-time top executive – as president, effective Jan. 1, with J. Patrick Gallagher continuing as board chairman and CEO.

Thomas J. Gallagher is being promoted from corporate vice president, global retail property/casualty brokerage.

Patrick M. Gallagher, J. Patrick Gallagher’s son, was named executive vice president and chief operating officer, also effective Jan. 1. He is being promoted from CEO, brokerage services-Americas.

J. Patrick Gallagher said he has no plans to retire.

The story detailing the changes was the third-most-read risk management-related story on Business Insurance’s website in 2023.

Among other 2023 executive changes at Gallagher, Mark Hansen was named COO of Gallagher Re, the company’s reinsurance brokerage arm, replacing Chris Brook, who joined BMS Group Ltd. Mr. Hansen was previously COO for North America.

The brokerage also promoted Tom Wakefield from CEO of Gallagher Re’s United Kingdom operations to CEO of Gallagher Re.

Gallagher named James Kent, previously head of Gallagher Re, to CEO, global insurance strategic relationships, at the parent company. He subsequently retired.
