The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries said Friday it cited a cabinet manufacturing company for numerous repeated safety violations.
The department fined Ridgefield, Washington-based CommCaseworks Inc. $187,000 and cited it for 11 “willful serious,” one “willful general,” three “serious” and seven “general” violations.
The citation stems from repeat violations first discovered by workplace safety inspectors in 2019, but that were never corrected.
The company was additionally fined $119,524 for separate violations related to spray-finishing operations, having no emergency eyewash stations, and not providing eye protection. The department said workers were found spraying flammable glue only feet away from electrical ignition sources.
In February, workers informed inspectors that they were made to use table saws with missing guards, and they were instructed to perform maintenance on machines before ensuring they would not accidentally turn on, the department stated.
The department said the “willful” violations are due to the company’s owner refusing to install safety guards on the table saws “even after instructed to install them by inspectors.”
The department initially issued an “order of immediate restraint” shutting down work, but the order was lifted after CommCaseworks came into compliance during the course of four follow-up site visits following the initial inspection.
