The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday it cited a Wisconsin sawmill for continuing to put workers in danger of amputations and other hazards.
OSHA cited Tigerton-based Tigerton Lumber Co. for three repeat violations, 14 serious violations and two other-than-serious violations and proposed $283,608 in penalties.
The citation was issued after a follow-up inspection in which OSHA said the company failed to take corrective measures after it was named a severe violator in 2019 following the death of an employee the year prior.
The company violated federal regulations for energy control procedures and failed to affix personal locks needed as part of a lockout/tagout program designed to prevent equipment from operating during employee maintenance and servicing, OSHA said.
The worker who died in 2018 had suffered fatal injuries caused by similar hazards, according to the agency.
Tigerton Lumber has 15 business days to contest the citation and proposed penalties.
