Auto freight company cited over fall hazards

An international freight handling company was cited by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration for 22 serious violations, one willful violation and one other-than-serious violation after regulators said it exposed dozens of workers to deadly hazards.

OSHA on Friday announced it proposed $379,709 in penalties against W8 Shipping LLC after inspectors found the company exposed workers at a Port of Savannah warehouse in Georgia to the risk of being struck or crushed by falling cars and motorcycles elevated by forklifts during loading and unloading processes.

The company was also cited for failing to give proper eye protection to employees working with liquid propane tanks and nail guns, permitting workers to drive powered industrial trucks with obstructed views and allowing employees to work on trailers at heights over six feet without fall protection.

The company, which began as a Tampa-based auto sales business in 2005, is an international freight forwarder providing global shipping services for exported vehicles. It operates warehouses in California, New Jersey, Texas and Washington.

The company has 15 business days to contest the citations.
