California workers comp direct written premium up in 2022

Total workers comp direct written premium increased about 11.7% in 2022, as job creation and rising wages drove up covered wages enough to offset a decrease in average charged rates, the California Workers’ Compensation Institute reported Friday.

CWCI said total direct written premium for 2022 was $11.6 billion, compared with $10.4 billion in 2021.

The average charged rate fell 7% to $1.68 per $100 of payroll last year, but CWCI said payroll growth drove up covered wages.

CWCI also reported market share information for 2022, with the State Compensation Insurance Fund ranked the largest workers comp insurer in the state with 10.1% of the market.

In ranking order, AmTrust Financial Services Group followed with 7.5% of the market; Berkshire Hathaway Group with 7%; Hartford Fire and Casualty Group with 6%; and ICW Group with 5.6%.
