Swiss Re Q1 profit up 18%

Swiss Re Ltd. Friday reported first-quarter net income of $1.3 billion, up 18.1% from the year-earlier period.
Property/casualty reinsurance net income slipped 5% to $527 million, with a combined ratio of 86.0%. Large natural catastrophe claims, mainly related to the Los Angeles wildfires, totaled $570 million, accounting for 29% of the full-year large natural catastrophe claims budget.
Large man-made losses totaled $140 million.
Net income for the Corporate Solutions unit rose 6.67% to $208 million, with a combined ratio of 88.4%.
Large natural catastrophe losses for the Corporate Solutions unit of $60 million were largely driven by the Los Angeles wildfires and Tropical Cyclone Alfred in Queensland, Australia. The unit saw large man-made losses of $147 million in the quarter.
Life and Health Reinsurance net income rose 6.15% to $439 million.
