FM targets growing data centers, broadens manufacturing offering

CHICAGO – FM on Tuesday launched a program aimed at providing specialized loss-prevention services and coverage to data centers, which are expected to see significant growth with the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence products and services.

FM Intellium will be a new business vertical for FM offering tailored coverage for companies with data centers, said Malcolm Roberts, CEO of the Johnston, Rhode Island-based insurer, during an interview at Riskworld, the annual conference of the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.

“We’ve insured data centers for a long time, but in the last two years we’ve really started to notice an almost exponential growth in this space,” he said.

Many of the new AI companies have significant funding and can make the investments in loss prevention that FM requires as a condition of coverage, Mr. Roberts said.

The launch comes about a month after FM launched FM Essential, targeting manufacturing businesses that cannot yet make the capital investment in loss prevention that FM requires for its full, highly protected risk coverage.

“They get the benefit of our engineering insights, but it won’t be quite as full white-glove service,” Mr. Roberts said.

“The reason we can do this now is data, AI and analytics. We’re able to take that engineering knowledge and combine it with the analytics and AI into a more digital product.”

FM introduced the coverage, which it writes through its stock company, in New York and Paris on April 1, and it will be introduced globally on Jan. 1, 2026, he said.
