NIST unveiling group to address AI ‘opportunities and challenges’

The National Institute of Standards and Technology said Thursday it is introducing a public working group on artificial intelligence that will help address “the opportunities and challenges” presented by the technology.

Gaithersburg, Maryland-based NIST, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, said the group will also help NIST develop “key guidance” to help address the technology’s special risks.

It said the announcement follows a meeting President Biden convened earlier this week with leading AI experts and researchers in California as part of the administration’s efforts in this area.

NIST said the group will draw upon volunteers, with technological experts for the private and public sectors.

It said the group will build upon the success of its AI risk management framework, which was introduced in January.
