CWCI projects high mark for COVID claims in January

The California Workers’ Compensation Institute is projecting that total COVID-19 claims filed in January will exceed the previous high-water mark from December 2020.

A total of 30,554 claims with January 2022 dates of injury have been reported as of Feb. 7. The January claim count is already the second-highest for any month since the pandemic started. But CWCI is projecting the number will rise to 45,831.

If those projections pan out, claims filed in the first month of 2022 would exceed the 43,720 filed with dates of injury in December 2022, which is currently projected to climb to 44,113.

As of Feb. 7, 224,201 claims for COVID-19 have been filed in California, including 1,327 deaths.

CWCI reports 153,688 claims, or 68.5%, were accepted and 70,513, or 31.5%, were denied.
