Ryan Specialty taps exec for Ryan Re MGU

Specialty insurer Ryan Specialty said Tuesday it has named former Berkshire Hathaway executive John “JJ” Gorman as head of facultative and facilities for Ryan Re Underwriting Managers, a managing general underwriter focused on property and casualty reinsurance.

Mr. Gorman will start with Ryan on Oct. 1 and will initially focus on casualty facultative business as the result of the flow of business resulting from Markel Insurance’s sale of its reinsurance renewal rights to Nationwide. Ryan Specialty is handling the underwriting and management of that business.

Mr. Gorman, based in Atlanta, will report to Ryan Re Underwriting Managers President and CEO Emil Issavi.

He was most recently head of facultative at Berkshire Hathaway, where he started the property and casualty facultative business.
