Aggregate net premiums written among a group of 17 U.S. property/casualty reinsurers rose 11% to $27.3 billion for the three months ended March 31, the Reinsurance Association of America said Monday.
The combined ratio for the group tracked by the RAA was 95.3% compared with 95.1% for the same period in 2022, a statement from the group said.
The combined ratio for the group comes despite a higher loss ratio, 78.0% versus 73.3% for the same period in 2022, which was offset by a lower expense ratio, 17.3% against 21.8% for the same period in 2022.
The policyholders’ surplus rose 12.5% to $286.3 billion from the end of fourth-quarter 2022, according to the statement.
