The National Football League and the NFL Players Association Pain Management Committee announced a request for proposals on Tuesday for medical researchers to investigate the effect of cannabinoids on pain management in football players and the impact of non-pharmacological treatments on pain and athletic performance.
The 2-year-old committee, which was formed with the goal of improving the health and safety of football players through education and research, will provide up to $1 million for the funding recipient to carry out the studies. The RFP states that the committee intends to find funding support for up to five pilot research proposals from leaders in the field of pain management and the effects of cannabinoids.
Proposals are due July 31 and the NFL maintains the final say over which proposals are funded.
