Grant Smith named Head of Transport and Logistics at Markel

Markel, the insurance division of Markel Group Inc., has announced the appointment of Grant Smith as the head of its Transport and Logistics team, effective immediately.

In his expanded role, Smith will oversee the development of underwriting strategies aimed at achieving sustainable and profitable growth within the Transport and Logistics sector.

His responsibilities include increasing market share, spearheading product innovation, and solidifying Markel’s position as a market leader in this space.

In addition to his new role, Smith will retain his position as Director of Marine and Energy Liabilities, a role he assumed in August 2024. He will continue to report to Tom Hillier, Managing Director of International Specialty at Markel.

Smith brings over 17 years of experience in the insurance industry, having held various underwriting and leadership roles across multiple classes of business. Before joining Markel in August 2024, he served as Portfolio Manager, Specialty, at QBE European Operations, a position he held since 2014.

Prior to that, Smith worked as a Marine and Energy Liability Underwriter at QBE, starting in 2011. His earlier career included five years at Travelers, where he gained valuable expertise in marine and aviation through a range of underwriting roles.
