Specialty insurer and reinsurer IQUW has introduced a new Active Assailant insurance offering in collaboration with Crisis24, a crisis response specialist.
This product is designed to provide coverage for physical attacks perpetrated by individuals or groups using weapons like guns, knives, vehicles, or drones, aimed at inflicting harm, injury, death, or property damage.
Unlike traditional Terrorism insurance, which requires proof of political, religious, or ideological motives for coverage to apply, Active Assailant insurance is broader. It focuses on attacks where the attacker’s motives may not be clearly defined, making it more relevant to current global threats.
The frequency of mass shootings in the United States has surged by 43% in the past decade, while Europe has witnessed a rise in lone-actor violent extremism, where understanding the motive can often be challenging.
As a result, Active Assailant coverage is becoming increasingly crucial for businesses to manage risks and protect their employees and customers both financially and emotionally.
IQUW’s Active Assailant insurance, led by Kate Hughes, Underwriter for Terrorism, Political Violence & War, is available to a wide variety of sectors, including commercial and residential properties, religious organisations, healthcare and educational institutions, events, and local governments.
Additionally, IQUW’s partnership with Crisis24 enhances this offering by providing access to the world’s largest team of private sector intelligence analysts, ensuring clients receive immediate, expert support in the event of an attack.
“Active assailant attacks pose real threats to businesses, particularly in the US, which has seen a dramatic rise in shooter incidents. Many of these events are not covered under All Risk or General Liability policies, leaving businesses vulnerable,” said Hughes.
“IQUW Active Assailant plugs that gap in cover. We have built a probabilistic framework, which utilises historic data to inform our modelling and provides comprehensive cover to suit individual business needs.”
Dan Callow, IQUW’s Lead Underwriter, Terrorism, Political Violence & War, added: “Combining Crisis24’s knowledge of crisis response services with Kate’s expertise, demonstrates IQUW’s capability to understand where cover gaps might occur and to quickly develop simple solutions to support brokers and their clients.”
