A research group on Monday warned biomanufacturers about malware attacks directed at their facilities.
The Bioeconomy Information Sharing and Analysis Center, an international not-for-profit organization that addresses security threats unique to the bioeconomy, said in a statement a large biomanufacturing facility was the target of a cyberattack in spring 20021.
Subsequent investigation indicated it was a malware loader, dubbed Tardigrade, that “demonstrated a high degree of autonomy as well as metamorphic capabilities.” It said in its statement the malware was found at a second facility last month.
The statement said while BIO-ISAC is continuing its analysis, biomanufacturing sites and their partners “are encouraged to assume that they are targets and take necessary steps to review their cybersecurity and response postures.”
