Concirrus, a provider of AI-powered maritime insurance solutions, has entered into a partnership with the 90 North Foundation, in a move that reinforces the company’s dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
As Reinsurance News understands, this collaboration represents a major step towards the protection and sustainable management of the Arctic Ocean, which is known for being one of the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems.
One of 90 North Foundation’s key goals is to safeguard the biodiversity of the Arctic Ocean and ensure the long-term sustainability of its ecosystem services.
In fact, the Foundation plays a critical role in advancing sustainable development by lessening the harmful effects of marine activities, particularly from vessels navigating the Arctic’s fragile ecosystem.
Through this partnership with Concirrus, which will see the firm provide data-driven technology, this will allow the Foundation to focus its attention on reducing vessel-induced stressors and mitigating risks to both native and migratory species, ensuring the preservation of the Arctic’s ecological balance.
Moreover, in collaboration with its research partners at The University of Exeter, 90 North Foundation will reportedly leverage Concirrus’ Quest One platform to gather crucial data on vessel activity and behaviours across the Arctic Ocean.
This integration will allow for the Foundation to gain access to detailed insights into vessel behaviors, including tracking the routes, types, and operational patterns of ships navigating the Arctic. As a result, this data will be highly instrumental towards assessing the environmental impact of maritime activities, with a particular focus on adherence to ESG standards.
As for Concirrus, by aligning its technological capabilities with the 90 North Foundation’s conservation goals, the company is taking a proactive role in supporting environmental protection while also promoting responsible governance in the maritime industry.
Andrew Yeoman, Chief Executive Officer at Concirrus, commented: “The work that Pen Hadow and the 90 North Foundation are doing is crucial for the sustainable future of the Arctic Ocean. As a company, Concirrus is deeply committed to ESG principles, and this partnership allows us to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of one of the world’s most important and delicate environments. By providing the insights generated by Quest One, we can support the Foundation’s efforts to influence policy and drive sustainable change in the maritime sector. We are excited to see what we can achieve together.”
Pen Hadow, Executive Director of 90 North Foundation, said: “Concirrus is making available to 90 North Foundation mission-critical raw and processed data about all vessels and their movements in the Arctic Ocean. This data enables our research partners to integrate, quantify and forecast the impacts of vessel activities with existing research on Arctic marine biodiversity. The resulting spatial mapping of risks to individual species and ecosystems will inform the optimal conservation measures needed to protect the region’s vulnerable wildlife as its sea-ice habitat recedes.”
