Insurance provider Admiral has joined the Flood Re Build Back Better scheme through its household insurance policies, offering an important step towards improving flood resilience.
The scheme aims to increase a property’s flood resistance or resilience, allowing qualifying policies to access additional funding after a flood claim to install measures that help prevent future flooding.
Flood Re is a partnership between the UK government and insurers, established to make flood coverage more affordable for homeowners. Admiral has been a supporter of this initiative since its inception in 2016.
The Build Back Better scheme represents the next phase in assisting homeowners impacted by flooding.
It offers qualifying policies up to £10,000, in addition to reinstatement costs, to install flood prevention measures such as flood doors, barriers, and non-return valves. These improvements are designed to mitigate the impact of future floods.
With flooding becoming an increasingly frequent risk, Admiral’s commitment to flood resilience aligns with its sustainability objectives.
Strengthening flood resistance not only reduces the severity of flood damage but also lessens the need for new materials during repairs. This can reduce drying times and allow residents to return to their homes sooner, minimising disruption.
Admiral’s Head of Household Underwriting, David Fowkes, commented, “We know how devastating the damage, inconvenience and emotional burden a flood in the home can be, and unfortunately, we’re seeing an increase in flooding across the UK in recent years.
“Build Back Better enables us to decrease the impact on our customers, and the communities they live in, through increased flood resilience and resistance. It should have a positive impact on homeowners and theirfamilies affected by flooding and help them not only in the aftermath of a flood, but for the long term.”
Flood Re’s Head of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, Kelly Ostler-Coyle, added: “We’re delighted that Admiral has joined our world first Build Back Better (BBB) scheme which now has commitment from 77% of the UK home insurance market. They’ve joined other insurance providers already offering BBB to their customers who are benefitting from the peace of mind Property Flood Resilience brings to those at high risk of flood.
“Last year Flood Re received 28% of all claims since its inception in 2016. This highlights the urgent need for adaptation as we see more severe flooding which is also happening more frequently.”
