AM Best names Holzberger as Chief Operating Officer; Johnson as Senior MD & Chief Ratings Officer

AM Best, a credit rating agency specialising in the insurance industry, has announced the appointment of Kenneth J. Johnson as Senior Managing Director and Chief Ratings Officer, overseeing AM Best’s global ratings operations.

Johnson will be based at AM Best’s global headquarters in Oldwick, NJ, reporting directly to Stefan Holzberger, who has recently assumed the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of AM Best Rating Services.

With over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry and credit analysis, Johnson has held managerial roles at HSBC Securities (USA) Inc. and J.P. Morgan/Chase Manhattan Bank, where he specialised in insurance coverage.

He joined AM Best in 2009 and has since taken on roles of increasing responsibility, most recently as Managing Director and a senior member of the rating division. Additionally, he co-founded the Investment Working and Hybrid Evaluation Groups within the division.

Johnson’s formal credit training was completed through Chase Manhattan’s MBA Credit Training Program. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designations, and earned an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Holzberger, who joined AM Best in 2001, previously served as Chief Ratings Officer. In his new role as Chief Operating Officer, he is now responsible for AM Best’s global ratings operations, including data management, rating methodology, and the ratings division itself.

Holzberger will report to James Gillard, President of AM Best Rating Services, and beginning in 2025, he will also assume executive management positions in AM Best’s non-US subsidiaries. He holds the Chartered Financial Consultant (CFC) designation, is a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and earned an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

“Stefan and Ken bring extensive knowledge of the insurance industry and the financial services sector, with a depth and breadth of experience of the credit rating industry,” added Gillard. “They will be strong leaders for our global analytical teams.”
