Aspen names John Welch as Group Chief Underwriting Officer

Bermuda domiciled insurer and reinsurer Aspen Insurance Holdings has appointed John Welch as Group Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), effective August 1st, 2025.

In his new role, Welch will report to Christian Dunleavy, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Aspen Bermuda Limited.

He will be responsible for overseeing, developing, and executing Aspen’s underwriting strategy across the Group.

Welch is an industry veteran with over three decades of experience in executive roles across global players. He originally joined Aspen as CUO, Reinsurance in June 2023 and led Aspen’s Reinsurance function, including specialty, property, and casualty portfolios.

Prior to this, Welch was the Chief Executive of Domestic Markets, AXA XL Reinsurance based in Dublin, Ireland, before which he was the Chief Executive of North America, AXA XL Reinsurance.

He has also served as the Chief Executive of North American Reinsurance for XL Catlin and as the President of XL Reinsurance America.

Welch started his career as a Reinsurance Actuary for Travelers Insurance in 1996.
