Bill passes in Maine to keep first-responder presumption

Maine lawmakers passed a bill that would preserve the statutory presumption that post-traumatic stress disorder conditions arose from employment as a first responder.

Maine law presumes PTSD arose from employment for law enforcement, corrections workers, firefighters, dispatch and emergency medical services.

The presumption in place since 2017 is set to expire Oct. 1.

Lawmakers voted to send the governor LD82, which would eliminate the sunset date and continue the PTSD presumption indefinitely.

LD82 is an emergency measure that would take effect immediately if signed by Gov. Janet Mills.
