California comp earned premium up in 2022

California workers compensation earned premium totaled $15.3 billion last year, up from $13.6 billion in 2021, the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California reported Tuesday.

Paid losses totaled $8.3 billion in 2022, compared with $8.1 billion the previous year.

California insurers incurred $5.9 billion in expenses in 2022. Medical benefits for injured workers totaled $4.4 billion, while indemnity benefits totaled $4.0 billion.

The highest percentage of medical service payments, 19.2%, went to hospital-based providers, while physician specialists received 10.9%, occupational health providers 10.5% and surgeons received 10.3%.

Fifty-six percent of indemnity payments were for temporary disability, while total permanent partial disability payments accounted for 34%.

Attorneys representing injured worker claimants were paid a total of $395 million last year, up from $389 million in 2021.
