California continues to see increased comp claims based on location

Despite controlling for regional differences in wages and industry mix, indemnity claim frequency continues to be significantly higher in the Los Angeles basin than the statewide average, the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California reported.
In Northern California claim activity remains “significantly lower” than the statewide average, according to the ratings agency report released Dec. 3.
Claim frequency in the Los Angeles and Long Beach region was more than 35% above the statewide average, and frequency in the Yuba City, Redding and Far North region, as well as the Peninsula and Silicon Valley region, was more than 20% below the statewide average.
The WCIRB also reported that the statewide share of paid medical for medical-legal reports was at an all-time high after increasing in nearly all parts of the state.
Los Angeles and other parts of Southern California had the highest share of litigated indemnity claims at more than 12% above the statewide average, according to the report. The Yuba City, Redding and Far North region and the Sonoma and Napa region had the lowest share at more than 17% below the statewide average.
