The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said Thursday it has awarded nearly $200 million to a whistleblower who provided “specific, credible and timely original information” that significantly contributed to an open investigation.
The CFTC said the information provided led to a successful enforcement action as well as the success of two related actions by a U.S. federal regulator and a foreign regulator.
Neither the whistleblower nor the company involved was identified by the CFTC.
The CFTC’s statement said the whistleblower’s information led it “to important, direct evidence of wrongdoing.”
The agency said the CFTC has granted a total of more than $3 billion in whistleblower awards associated with enforcement actions with this award.
The agency’s whistleblower program was created under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
