At least 81 people have been confirmed dead and 41 remain missing after flash floods devastated central Texas on Friday, with more storms expected in the region.
The flash floods began Thursday night of last week and continued into Friday morning, as several months’ worth of rain fell within just a few hours. Notably, the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes.
Casualty figures are still evolving as rescuers continue to search for the missing, with officials noting that the toll is certain to rise. In Kerr County, the hardest-hit area, at least 40 adults and 28 children have reportedly been killed.
At the time of this report, additional rainfall has already begun swelling waterways in Kerr County.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said flash flooding continues to pose a danger for several parts of the state as “more heavy rainfall” is expected.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration on Sunday for Kerr County, activating the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Texas.
“We’re working very closely with representatives from Texas, and it’s a horrible thing that took place, absolutely horrible,” Trump said.
Potential impacts on the re/insurance sector are beginning to emerge, though it remains too early to make any reliable estimations of the financial toll.
