Florida behavioral health facility cited over workplace violence

A Florida behavioral health and substance disorder facility has been cited for failing to take proper steps to protect workers from incidents of workplace violence.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Thursday announced findings from an investigation into Wekiva Springs Hospital in Jacksonville that showed 182 alleged incidents of workplace violence in 2022, 70% of which required a police response. The hospital is part of UHS of Delaware Inc.-Wekiva Springs Center LLC.

The incidents included hospital workers suffering broken bones, concussions and other injuries in attacks by patients, according to OSHA. The agency said that in one case a patient repeatedly smashed an employee’s head into an air conditioning unit.

OSHA cited the company for a serious violation for allegedly failing to provide a workplace free from safety hazards likely to cause serious physical harm or death and issued proposed fines of $15,625.

An administrative law judge earlier this year found that UHS of Delaware Inc. didn’t do enough to protect workers from incidents of workplace violence at a behavioral health facility in Massachusetts.
