Former AIG executive Tom Bolt dies

Tom Bolt, who retired last year as chief risk officer of American International Group, has died, the company announced Friday.

Mr. Bolt was a longtime insurance and reinsurance executive, working for long periods in London and New York.

Graduating with degrees in English literature and economics from Northwestern University in 1978, he spent 25 years at Berkshire Hathaway. He left to join Lloyd’s of London as director, performance management, in 2009, but returned to Berkshire in 2016 as president and CEO of the U.K. and Southern Europe.

In 2017 he joined AIG as chief underwriting officer, general insurance, and was promoted to chief risk officer in 2022.

“He led our efforts to create a standard for underwriting across all of AIG, which strengthened our culture at a pivotal time for the company,” AIG said.

Mr. Bolt was also an exceptional mentor, it said. “His quick wit and creative storytelling were legendary and endearing. For all of his humility, Tom’s formidable intellect, integrity and deep empathy were ever-present and served as an inspiring example of world-class leadership.”
