Stephen J. Klingel, who retired as president and CEO of the National Council on Compensation Insurance Inc. in 2016, has died, the organization said Tuesday.
Mr. Klingel began leading Boca Raton, Florida-based NCCI in 2002. Before joining NCCI, he was senior vice president for commercial lines with The St. Paul Cos. Inc., which merged with The Travelers Cos. Inc. in 2004.
In an interview with Business Insurance just before his retirement, Mr. Klingel described his insurance career as “an amazing 42 years.”
“I never realized, until I got into it, what an honor it is to work in this industry because of what we do, which is come to the rescue of people — individuals, businesses, whomever — at sometimes the worst possible moments of their lives. … I’ve been very proud to be a part of that for so many years,” he said.
