Former Lloyd’s head Neal to join AIG instead of Aon

American International Group Inc. said Wednesday it has named former Lloyd’s of London CEO John Neal its new president, beginning Dec. 1.

Mr. Neal had been slated to join Aon PLC as global chairman of climate solutions and global CEO of reinsurance, an appointment announced in January.

At AIG, he will lead the general insurance organization, which includes North America commercial insurance, international commercial insurance and global personal insurance. He will report to Chairman and CEO Peter Zaffino and have offices in London and New York.

Mr. Neal was CEO of Lloyd’s from October 2018 to January 2025. Before that he was group CEO of Australia’s QBE Insurance Group Ltd.

Don Bailey, CEO, North America commercial insurance, Jon Hancock, CEO, international commercial insurance and global personal insurance, and Christopher Flatt, global chief underwriting officer, will report to Mr. Neal. Previously, they reported to Mr. Zaffino.

Greg Case, president and CEO of Aon, said in a statement: “We wish John Neal great success in his new role and look forward to working with him at AIG.”

Meanwhile, Aon announced several senior reinsurance appointments Wednesday.

Alfonso Valera was named CEO of International for reinsurance, responsible for the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Steve Hofmann was named CEO of Americas for reinsurance. The company also announced the appointment of George Attard as global head of strategy for reinsurance and Tomas Novotny as chairman of International for Reinsurance.

Madrid-based Mr. Valera and Prague, Czechia-based Mr. Novotny were previously co-CEOs of EMEA for reinsurance; Chicago-based Mr. Hofmann was CEO of U.S. reinsurance; and Singapore-based Mr. Attard was CEO of Asia-Pacific reinsurance.
