The Federal Trade Commission said Monday it is ordering nine large retailers, wholesalers and consumer good suppliers to provide data that will help it investigate the causes behind the ongoing supply chain disruptions and their impact.
The agency said in a statement that under a section of the FTC Act, it has sent orders to Walmart Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Kroger Co., C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc., Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc., McLane Co. Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., Tyson Foods Inc. and Kraft Heinz Co., giving them 45 days to respond.
FTC chair Lina M. Khan said in a statement, “Supply chain disruptions are upending the provision and delivery of a wide array of goods,” and she is hopeful the study “will shed light on market conditions and business practices that may have worsened these disruptions or led to asymmetric effects.”
The FTC said in its statement the study will examine whether supply chain disruptions are leading to specific bottlenecks, shortages and anticompetitive practices, or contributing to rising prices.
The orders require the companies to detail the primary factors behind supply chain disruptions, as well as to provide internal documents on the issue.
