Gallagher Re appoints Michael Pickel as Executive Chair for DACH and Italy

Gallagher Re has announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Pickel as Executive Chair for DACH and Italy, where he will work together with the leadership teams in both regions.

Pickel brings a total of 36 years in the reinsurance industry, representing a unique set of skills and expertise to strengthen Gallagher Re’s existing teams across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

“We are delighted to welcome him into our group and excited to benefit from his deep knowledge of clients’ needs and solutions across those regions,” a Gallagher Re spokesperson stated.

Pickel spent 25 years of his career at Hannover Rück SE and E+S Rückversicherung AG, the Hannover Re subsidiary responsible for the Group’s German business.

He left the company in 2024, as he announced his retirement. Thorsten Steinmann succeeded him as a member of the Executive Board.

Pickel had been with Hannover Re and E+S Rück since 2000 when he joined the Executive Boards of both companies from Gerling Globale Rückversicherungs-AG in Cologne, Germany.

Since then, he held numerous responsibilities at Hannover Re’s and E+S Rück’s Executive Boards.

In his last position at Hannover Re, the executive was in charge of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy as well as Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and the Middle East as well as of Group Legal Services. Pickel is also currently globally responsible for Run-Off Solutions and Agricultural Risks.

Pickel has also served at Delvag Versicherungs-AG as a Member of the Supervisory Board for close to nine years, and was part a Barmenia Insurance Advisory Board Member for almost six years.
