The International Underwriting Association (IUA), the representative body for London company market insurers, has announced the appointment of three new directors as part of a wider organisational restructure, with these changes coming under the direction of Chris Jones, who became Chief Executive of the IUA on May 1.
The restructure includes the formal split of the Director of Underwriting and Claims role—previously held by Jones—into two separate positions.
Tom Hughes has been named Director of Underwriting, and Joe Shaw has been appointed Director of Claims. This move aims to enhance the IUA’s ability to provide more targeted support and technical expertise to its member firms.
Jones stated: “The IUA is dedicated to supporting best practices throughout the insurance lifecycle. With two new directors for underwriting and claims we will be able to provide members with a more focused service for their day-to-day operations.
“The London Market is renowned for its underwriting expertise, and claims services are the essential benefit upon which clients judge our industry.”
In his new role, Hughes will focus on building a network of Chief Underwriting Officers across the London company market to serve as a strategic advisory group. Shaw, meanwhile, plans to introduce a series of best practice guides for specific classes of business to support claims professionals.
Both Hughes and Shaw have held senior positions within the IUA’s underwriting and claims department and will continue to co-lead the teams that oversee a wide range of industry committees.
In addition to these appointments, the IUA has promoted Kim Darrington to Director of Market Operations and Transformation. In this role, she will lead the association’s work on digital initiatives, ensuring members are actively involved in shaping and implementing technology solutions across the market.
Darrington has more than 20 years’ experience in the insurance sector, having worked for both brokers and insurers. She joined the IUA in 2016 following a career that began in claims.
She added: “The IUA has always been influential in the strategic design and project governance of market processes and technology. I look forward to helping drive a collaborative approach that will enable companies to maximise operational efficiencies and cost savings.”
