James River Group Holdings Ltd., a Bermuda-based insurer, Monday named Todd Sutherland as the next president of its excess and surplus lines segment.
He succeeds Richard Schmitzer, who announced he will step down as CEO of the E&S segment effective July 31 and retire during the fourth quarter.
Mr. Sutherland will report directly to Frank D’Orazio, CEO of James River, in the new role.
Richmond, Virginia-based Mr. Sutherland previously was senior vice president, management liability, within the E&S segment. He joined James River in 2023 to establish the management liability division. Prior to that, he was head of the U.S. central zone at Axa XL, and before that, he led the development of the U.S. central region at Allied World Assurance Co.
With the succession plan, the title of E&S segment CEO will be retired in lieu of segment president, the insurer said in a statement.
