Markel Canada appoints Cliff Laidlaw as SVP Underwriting

Markel Canada Limited has announced the appointment of Cliff Laidlaw as Senior Vice President (SVP), Underwriting.

In this role, Laidlaw will oversee underwriting and portfolio management for all of Markel’s Canadian insurance products. He will also lead a team of underwriting professionals, focusing on supporting sustainable growth in Canada.

David Crozier, President and Managing Director at Markel Canada, said, “We’re entering an exciting new chapter as we shift our focus from first stabilizing our underwriting book, through radical transformations of process to enhance ease of doing business, to strategically growing our portfolio.”

Laidlaw brings over 15 years of industry experience. He joined Markel Canada in 2019 as AVP, Product Line Leader for Casualty and Third Party Liability. Since 2021, he has served as Vice President, Product Line Leader – Property & Casualty.

Before joining Markel, Laidlaw spent eight years at Everest, where he was most recently Director, Specialty Commercial.
