Richard R. Whitt III will retire as co-CEO of Markel Corp. in March 2023, the Glen Allen, Virginia-based insurer announced Wednesday.
On Mr. Whitt’s retirement, Thomas S. Gayner, the company’s other co-CEO, will become Markel’s sole CEO, the company said in a statement.
Mr. Whitt, 58, joined Markel in 1991 and was named co-CEO in 2016.
Jeremy A. Noble, Markel’s chief financial officer, will lead the insurer’s global insurance operations and Mr. Whitt will remain as a consultant to transition his insurance-related responsibilities to Mr. Noble, the statement said.
Mr. Noble will keep his responsibilities as CFO until a successor is appointed.
In addition, Michael R. Heaton, formerly president of Markel Ventures Inc., was named executive vice president of Markel. He will be succeeded at Markel Ventures by Andrew G. Crowley, currently executive vice president of the unit.
