Markel strengthens Singapore & Hong Kong teams with key hires

Markel, the insurance operations within Markel Group Inc., has announced several key appointments to its Singapore and Hong Kong teams, strengthening its operations and underwriting capabilities in the Asia Pacific region.

Alvernia Xu has been named Head of Operations, Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. In her new role, she will ensure that Markel has top-tier operational infrastructure to support its growth plans, improving efficiency for both clients and team members. Xu will report to Christian Stobbs, Managing Director – Asia Pacific, at Markel.

Xu joins from Liberty Specialty Markets, where she served as Senior Manager, Operations since 2021. In that role, she managed the Asia Operations team across Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and China. Prior to that, she worked at Chubb for six years, most recently as Regional Digital Account Manager.

Stobbs expressed enthusiasm for Xu’s appointment, stating, “We’re thrilled to have Alvernia Xu join our team. Her extensive experience in operations and digital distribution will be of huge benefit as we continue to expand our presence in the Asia Pacific region. Her strategic vision will drive our operations forward, ensuring we meet our growth and efficiency targets.”

Jenny Choi joins Markel as Senior Underwriter, International Casualty, based in Hong Kong. In this role, Choi will be responsible for developing a sustainable strategy to build a casualty portfolio in Asia for Markel’s new international casualty division.

Previously, Choi was Senior Casualty Facultative Underwriter, Vice President at Swiss Re. She has also held senior roles at Liberty Specialty Markets (Asia Pacific), QBE Insurance, Aon, and Tokio Marine Kiln.

Anna Tan joins Markel’s Hong Kong team as Senior Underwriter, Fine Art & Specie. Before this, she was Senior Underwriter, Fine Art & Specie at Hamilton Insurance Group for over five years. Tan has also worked at Ironshore Insurance and XL Catlin.

Olga Wong joins Markel in Singapore as Senior Underwriter, Professional Financial Risk (PFR). She previously served as Senior Financial Lines Underwriter at AXA XL for over four years and held senior roles at Aspen Insurance Group, XL Catlin, Chubb, and AIG.

Choi, Tan, and Wong will all report directly to Kevin Leung, Chief Underwriting Officer – Asia Pacific, at Markel.

Finally, Isabelle Wong has been appointed Cargo Underwriter at Markel, responsible for developing and underwriting marine cargo business in the Asia Pacific region.

Wong joins from AXA XL, where she served as an Underwriter. Before that, she was a Cargo Underwriter at XL Catlin for four years and spent three years at Zurich Insurance Company Ltd., most recently as Marine Underwriter.
