NY bill would require childcare assistance for essential workers

A New York lawmaker has introduced legislation that would require measures be taken to help prioritize the care of children of essential workers during an emergency.

Assembly Bill 10861, introduced Friday by Democratic Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz, would amend the state’s executive law to require state government agencies to develop plans to support the employees of essential businesses, nonprofits and other entities during a state of emergency.

The legislation would expand the assistance responsibilities of government agencies under a declared state disaster emergency to include creating policies for the benefit and protection of essential workers, including plans regarding the distribution of medical supplies and personal protective equipment and the provision of child care for the children of essential workers ages 12 and under.

If approved, the act would take effect immediately. A similar bill is being considered in the New York Senate.
