Oregon has become the sixth state this year and the 11th overall to approve a consumer privacy law.
Gov. Tina Kotek signed Senate Bill 619, enacting the Oregon Consumer Data Privacy Act into law on Tuesday.
Among its provisions, the law, which takes effect July 1, 2024, gives consumers the right to know whether their privacy data is being processed; correct inaccuracies; delete personal data; opt out of processing their personal information; and obtain copies of their personal data.
It contains heightened protections against revealing racial or ethnic backgrounds, genetic or biometric data and precise geolocation data, among other provisions.
Oregon joins Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Tennessee and Texas in passing comparable legislation this year, observers say.
Other states that have passed privacy laws are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia.
