The Occupational Safety and Health Administration extended to Jan. 14 the public comment period for its proposed rule to protect workers from extreme heat exposure in indoor and outdoor workplaces.
The public comment period had been scheduled to end Dec. 30. OSHA also announced an informal public hearing on the proposed rule will begin June 16, 2025.
The agency in July proposed a rule that would require employers to develop an injury and illness prevention plan to control heat hazards in workplaces affected by excessive heat. They would be required to evaluate heat risks and implement procedures to provide drinking water, rest breaks and climate control. They would also be required to develop a plan to acclimate new workers to high heat.
Employers would also be required to have procedures to take immediate action if a worker is showing symptoms of a heat-related illness.
