Strikes, Riots, and Civil Commotion (SRCC) are increasingly impacting the re/insurance industry with escalating costs across property damage, business interruption, and liability claims.
A recent Reinsurance News poll revealed that political and social divisions are perceived as the primary driver of this increase, with 55% of respondents citing them as the leading cause.
Economic instability followed at 26%, with social media influence and crime/antisocial behaviour trailing at 10% and 8%, respectively.
SRCC, a crucial sub-line of coverage in property policies, particularly commercial, has seen a dramatic rise in claims. According to Swiss Re’s Nikhil da Victoria Lobo, the re/insurance industry has witnessed a staggering 3000% increase in SRCC claims over the past 20 years, underscoring its growing significance.
Da Victoria Lobo also emphasised the variability of SRCC coverage across countries, stressing the importance of understanding the unique risk profile of each domestic market.
This involves evaluating factors such as urbanisation, population distribution, commercial interests, and the cohesion of civil society, including the responsiveness of police and political systems.
In the UK over one in four businesses were affected by civil unrest in 2024, with nearly two-thirds viewing it as a major concern for 2025, according to a recent Gallagher study.
The UK experienced nearly 1,000 protests in 2024, predominantly in England, resulting in an estimated £250 million in insured losses, alongside significant public compensation payouts.
Gallagher’s research also highlighted that many businesses are proactively addressing these risks by enhancing security measures, assessing risk exposure, and reviewing insurance coverage.
Notably, many business leaders attribute the unrest to prevailing economic conditions in the UK.
