Previsico survey finds most businesses lack a flood action plan

In the face of the escalating threat of climate change, a recent survey by Previsico, a company specialising in real-time flood forecasting and water management, reveals that 54% of organisations in both the public and private sectors do not have a plan to address the rising risk of flooding.

A majority of those surveyed acknowledged having “no plan in place,” even though they face potentially significant financial losses and operational disruptions from flood events.

Flooding can cause extensive damage, particularly to small businesses, where, according to FEMA in the US, 40% are unable to reopen after experiencing a major flood.

As reported by the UK Government’s Foresight Future Flooding study, annual flood losses in the UK have now exceeded £1 billion.

With the combined impact of climate change and increased urban development, flood risks are expected to increase fivefold by 2050.

However, the Lloyd’s Lab report suggests that 70% of commercial flood-related losses can be avoided with Previsico’s early warning systems, which help businesses take preventive measures and minimise damage from flooding.

Jonathan Jackson, CEO of Previsico, said: “It is vitally important for businesses to consider how they can drive towards actionable change amid climate challenges. Our new survey data highlights how some companies are not taking their flood risk seriously. We believe in giving people the right tools to minimise the impact of flooding in a way that enables them to prepare, act, and prevent.”

Creating a ‘Flood Action Plan’ is essential for effectively preparing for and responding to potential flooding, from pinpointing high-risk areas to training staff on how to manage flood situations. A well-structured, proactive flood action plan can help both businesses and homeowners reduce risks and minimise the impact of flooding.
