Resort owner to pay $1.4M to resolve EEOC discrimination suit

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Tuesday that the owner of a hotel and resort in Guam agreed to pay $1.4 million to resolve a national origin discrimination suit.

The EEOC said in its lawsuit, EEOC v. LeoPalace Guam Corp., filed in federal court in Hagatna, Guam, that the company provided non-Japanese employees with less favorable wages, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment compared with employees from Japan who had equal or lesser positions, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

LeoPalace also agreed to hire an external equal employment opportunity monitor to oversee compliance with training and policy procedures and the reinstatement of former employees interested in returning to work for the company.
