Risk management during a crisis: Alonzo Johnson, North Las Vegas

As the coronavirus pandemic upends normal operations for numerous organizations, Business Insurance is running daily profiles of risk managers who are adapting to the crisis.

Alonzo Johnson’s responsibilities as risk management and liability manager for the City of North Las Vegas these days include working as a resource for the city’s emergency management team.

Fortunately, although he is working remotely, he can manage processes electronically, “and not worry about hands-on processing in the office,” so new claims can be dealt with “without any interaction with individuals or paperwork. It’s all electronic,” he said.

Mr. Johnson said although he has been coming into the emergency management team’s office, “my team is working out of their homes, so I interact with them remotely. We use a lot of technology,” he said, “so I can still stay in contact with them and still have meetings and interactions” as well as see them virtually using apps.

“It’s working better than I thought it would.”

Mr. Johnson said he is now working on July 1 renewals for his property program. “All my information is available to me online, or saved in documents I have access to,” he said, adding he works with his broker electronically via email and phone.

He said he appreciates the opportunities and options available to him. “We can still function. We provide the essential functions to the city, but we’re still able to do our normal risk management jobs.”

“This is a new territory for pretty much the entire world,” Mr. Johnson said, “and I think people are finding new, creative ways to do things” and to be efficient.
