Sawmill operator cited after workers fatal crushing

The operator of an Alabama sawmill has been cited by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration after a worker was killed on the job in December.
OSHA announced Wednesday that it cited Troy-based Rex Lumber LLC with a willful violation for allowing workers to perform maintenance on equipment without controlling hazardous energy sources.
The worker was fatally crushed when stored energy caused an infeed unit on a jammed roller to close on him.
OSHA said the company failed to review its energy control procedures to ensure compliance and that it failed to train workers on how to isolate stored energy in hydraulic accumulators.
This is the third time the company has been cited since 2020, according to OSHA.
In the Troy, Alabama case, OSHA proposed $184,385 in penalties against Rex Lumber. The company has 15 business days to contest the citation and penalties.
OSHA said Rex Lumber – which operates sawmills in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi – has been cited for 19 serious and other-than-serious violations since 2013.
