SEC awards nearly $6 million to two whistleblowers

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday it has awarded almost $6 million to two whistleblowers who provided information and assistance in separate enforcement proceedings.

The agency said it awarded more than $3.5 million to a whistleblower who reported valuable information that prompted the SEC to expand an existing investigation into a new geographic area.

The whistleblower then provided supplemental information and assistance that helped the SEC bring the charges in the underlying enforcement action, the agency said in a statement.

In addition, the SEC awarded more than $2.4 million to a whistleblower who alerted the agency to unknown conduct, which led to the opening of an investigation. The whistleblower later met with SEC staff, providing documents and identifying potential witnesses.

The SEC does not reveal whistleblowers’ identities.
