Senate confirms EEOC Commissioner Samuels for second term

The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to confirm Democrat Jocelyn Samuels for a second five-year term as commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The Senate vote was 52-47 for Ms. Samuels, who was named as the commission’s vice chair by President Biden in January, and will retain that position. President Biden also named  Democrat commissioner Charlotte A. Burrows to replace Republican Janet Dhillon, who remains a commissioner, as chair.

During the Obama Administration, Ms. Samuels served as director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and as acting assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.

With its two other Republican commissioners, Keith E. Sonderling and Andrea R. Lucas, the EEOC will have a 3-2 Republican majority until Ms. Dhillon’s term ends in July 2022.

The agency named Carol A. Miaskoff as its legal counsel in June.
