Stripe to buy usage-billing platform Metronome

Founded in 2020, Metronome has built a platform designed to make billing “fast, flexible, and frictionless, enabling our customers to launch and iterate products faster, connect billing to the product experience, and act on real-time insights to drive strategic decision,” says its website.

The firm has raised around $78 million in funding over the years as its usage-billing model became increasingly popular in the era of AI.

In a social media post, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison says: “Metered pricing is the native business model for the AI era. As far as we can tell, the associated shift in how businesses generate revenue will be as big as the advent of SaaS.”

In a blog, Metronome chief Scott Woody says the firm “will become a core part of Stripe’s product suite, while still giving customers the flexibility to adopt best-in-class components across the quote to cash and monetisation stacks.

“Together, our products will serve users across the full spectrum, from simple self-serve models to the most complex enterprise workflows.”
