University of Miami faces sex and wage discrimination trial

A sex and wage discrimination lawsuit, in which the University of Miami is charged with paying a female political science professor $28,000 a year less than a male professor in the same department, will proceed to trial on Dec. 6, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Wednesday.

In litigation filed in U.S. District Court in Miami in July 2019, the agency charged the university with violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Pay Act.

On Sept. 29, Judge Robert N. Scola denied the university’s motion for summary judgment in the case, holding a jury must decide whether the two professors held substantially equal positions.

The university did not respond to a request for comment.
