Four affiliated waste removal companies will pay $3.1 million to settle an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit accusing them of engaging in a pattern and practice of discriminating against female applicants, the agency said Monday.
The EEOC said that since 2016, Waste Industries USA Inc., TransWaste Services LLC, Waste Industries Atlanta LLC and GFL Environmental Inc. denied female applicants truck driver positions based solely on their gender and subjected them to derogatory comments during the interview process.
The agency filed the suit, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Waste Industries Inc. et al., in federal court in Atlanta in September 2023, accusing the companies of violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
In addition to the monetary settlement, the companies will develop an outreach plan to recruit and hire more female truck drivers, the EEOC said.
Representatives for the parties did not respond to requests for comment.
